Sturgill seems to be reinventing his image by releasing this album under a new alias: Johnny Blue Skies. I’m not familiar with his reasons for why, but there are certainly elements of this album that feel new. The album has a distinct “blues” sound that, while present in some of his other music, has rarely appeared throughout an album. Besides being more blues-forward, the musical composition doesn’t feel incredibly different from his previous music. That being said, I enjoyed this album a lot and it still felt original and interesting. I certainly plan to listen to more of these tracks going forward.
